*** ABIGAIL (Jap) – ‘The Lord Of Satan’ CD (€9) To honor the nearly 20 year legacy of Abigail, NWN! is proud to present this vinyl collection of some of the band’s earliest work. Along with pioneers Sabbat and Sigh, Abigail have long been recognized as among the most influential Black Metal bands to have emerged from beneath the banner of the Rising Sun. While, in recent years, Abigail has shifted its focus to a more depraved blackened thrash sound, the early work presented on this LP is pure Black Metal played in a manner that is harsh and hostile. This LP opens with the five Abigail tracks featured on the band’s 1995 split CD with Funeral Winds. This material, which has never before been released on vinyl, displays the characteristic wickedness that permeates all of Abigail’s work. These tracks are not merely excursions in sound, however. Each song stands out on its own and the work as a whole evinces a sophisticated level of composition and production. Side B of this LP contains the tracks from Abigail’s first two EP releases. Nearly impossible to find now, “Descending from a Blackened Sky” and “Confound Eternal” contain some of Abigail’s most powerful and blackened revelations. The 1993 “Descending from a Blackened Sky” EP, executed entirely by Yasuyuki, is a magnificent breath of annihilation. Guided by furious and relentless blast beats, Yasuyuki’s style on this EP is more harsh and raw than most of Abigail’s other work. Yet, as with all Abigail recordings, amid the chaos there are well-crafted riffs and song structures that draw the listener deep into the demonic frenzy of the songs. “Confound Eternal” may be Abigail’s most refined statement prior to the release of their first album. This release marks the first appearance of Youhei on drums to supplement the wrath of Yasuyuki’s scathing guitars and vocals, an addition which allowed Yasuyuki to incorporate a greater variety of tempos and stylistic elements. These details, such as the band’s penchant for shifting suddenly, yet seamlessly, between manic blast beats and mid-paced stomp rhythms have come to define the Abigail sound. Importantly, Yasuyuki incorporates a greater array of melodic structure into the riffs on this EP as well. Indeed, every element of the band’s sound on this release is more concentrated. The guitars, particularly the use of solos, are superior to that any of the band’s prior recordings and Yasuyuki’s vocals are the howls of possession. That both of these songs were re-recorded and included on the band’s debut LP in 1997 demonstrates that the band recognized that its sound was becoming more focused and refined. Old fans shouldn’t be disappointed by this album musically either. There is of course a lot of maturity behind the dirges which augments the anger, disappointment and weariness at a flawed world, but in sound they’re as timeless as ever, from the traditionally styled riffs to the Ozzy sounding vocals of Fodde. Hardly has there ever been another band tapping so close to the pure essence of doom metal. CRUX (Cz) – ‘Rev Smrti’ CD (€10) CRUX was founded by bass player Roman Kríbek (also in DENET) and guitar player Petr “Blackosh“ Hošek (also in ROOT) in Czechoslovakia sometime between 1988-89. Later drummer René ”Evil“ Kostelník joined the band and in December 1991, about a year after the fall of the Communist regime, the three recorded the 7 track demo REV SMRTI. The demo became a perfect, audible example of the pressure years of Communistic oppression had built up inside the young Czech’s. REV SMRTI is a total outburst of dark creativity and sheer aggression, a Thrashing Blackness roaring along with ROOT’s magnificient Zjeveni, the fantastic Ritual by MASTERS HAMMER and BATHORY’s unparalleled The Return! The promotion of this tape was made in the usual underground fashion through tape trading, local club gigging and in reviews in small, obscure zine’s. Still the band never really took off to the next level, and the main reason for this was that ROOT took more and more of Blackosh’s time, until he decided to quit CRUX, and Evil soon followed him to ROOT, leaving Roman on his own. Time passed and in 2000 the very obscure and sought after demo was re-released by LEVIATHAN RECORDS, who used a demo copy for this purpose. The versions of REV SMRTI that I Hate now proudly release is from the original master tape, needless to say resulting in a superior sound compared to the 2000 re-release. In addition the CD comes with 4 bonus tracks, extensive biography, lots of exclusive pictures and lyrics for the songs, all in a 20 page booklet. The I Hate re-release of Rev Smrti will once and for all cement the name of CRUX in the line of famous Czech Metal acts such as ROOT, TÖRR and MASTERS HAMMER! *** CRYPTOPSY (Can) – ‘Once Was Not’ CD (€8) Cryptopsy's first studio album in five years, 2005's Once Was Not, is notable for reuniting main man and drum colossus Flo Mounier with original partner in crime and vocalist Lord Worm; in every other respect, it's pretty much a familiar exercise in the Canadian band's hyper-technical death metal. This, my friends, is a good thing. Not only because such a return to form will obvious thrill Cryptopsy's long-expectant original fanbase, but because, frankly, there's way too much melodic deathcore dominating the mid-2000s, and not enough worthy purveyors of complex, old-school brutality giving Nile and the also recently revived Suffocation a run for their money. This album does just that, and even though the musicianship involved is clearly as entertaining a factor in its discovery as anything else, the truly imaginative dynamic twists peppering most every track should not be overlooked. I feel that this album from Murkrat called "Drudging The Mire" could be one of those albums, that is if people can put up with the tortured pain that the music on this 70 plus minute album projects. Musically it is mostly in the funeral-doom style but there is no pretty melancholic melodies to be heard here, this is an expression of pure emotional pain and suffering. What also makes this unique is the vast influences that range from Thergothon, Esoteric, Worship to 19th century classical music and that combination is simply brutal. Visceral, meditative, introspective, spiritual and thunderous are just a few words I can think of to describe this album. "Drudging The Mire" is dark, somewhat disturbing and is also a very demanding album to sit through in one go, the level of anxiety in the grooves is overpowering at times. If you want to hear some funeral doom devoid of the usual melahcholy that funeral doom bands get into, then this album is for you. MYRKSKOG (Nor) – ‘Deathmachine’ CD (€10) It's difficult to dislike Myrkskog's debut, DeathMachine, especially if meat-and-potatoes blackened Death Metal is your flavor of choice! NECRODEATH (It) – ‘Into the Macabre’ CD (€9) Probably the most renouned Italian thrash band next to the legendary Bulldozer, and like the former a very clear influence on black metal, Necrodeath made their first mark on the world with this debut album chock full of blast beats and eery Exorcist interludes. The album has a very dark and haunting feeling, some of the guitars sort of feel like keyboards sometimes and the musicianship occasionally gets ahead of itself as they strive to play at the most breakneck speeds possible. Musically it sounds a bit like a muddier prime era Slayer or a much faster Destruction, with a little bit of early Cenotaph (Mex) thrown in. The atmosphere is unmistakeable! If you want a vicious spooky album to play on a dark stormy night, this is your pick. Originally released back in 1987! NECRODEATH (It) – ‘Fragments of Insanity’ CD (€9) Two years after the debut, that became a cult in the underground scene, Necrodeath are back with a new full length. This one is characterised by a more thrashy impact than the first one. The title, Fragments Of Insanity, is well reflected in the music, because you can feel madness, despair and hate in these songs: schizophrenic riffs, mad vocals and violent drums. If you want an orgy of occult early black/thrash sounds take the first Necrodeath album, but if you’re searching for a great violent schizophrenic assault, buy this one! But I can think of no other band at this time that was as truly malevolent and evil sounding as these guys were. A lot of people have compared this to Venom, and certainly those comparisons are valid. Both bands share a similar songwriting style and image. NME weren’t really a speed or thrash band in the sense that, say, Bathory, Slayer and Possessed were. Rather, much like Venom and Hellhammer, they relied on a series of mid-paced, malevolent grinding riffs and allowed the overall heaviness, atmosphere and distortion to carry the sound. However, the guitar sounds on here are far darker and more corrosive and sinister than Venom ever were; its actually somewhat indescribable: eerie and heavy at the same time. The playing is none too complex, but there is more going on than just the simple riffs. The guitar has way more reverb and distortion on it than Venom or Hellhammer, and the guitarist deliberately channels the feedback to accentuate the playing. The overall effect is one of simplicity and power, getting the most power out of each single note, mimimalism at its best. And the production values are none too pretty either but that’s the point, you just don’t want them to be. The raw minimalist production actually suits this music perfectly; everything cranked up to ten. Their live performance, however, is an integral part of the essence of VON. In the same way that VON’s music was simple but effective, the band’s live image was similarly minimal but calculated. Unlike many of their contemporaries, VON’s imagery was not marred by being trapped in a particular time and place. The aesthetic of VON is timeless and is as powerful now as it was then. This DVD collects the only video footage of VON known to exist. The two shows presented here both took place in the Bay Area. The second of these two shows contains a song entitled “Jesus Stain” that has never before been released. AMAZING! *** WAKE (Can) – ‘Leeches’ CD Digipack (€8) Wake are back with the same brew of death metal, grindcore and power violence jumble, just with more room to sprawl over the course of 14 songs. Set off by pristine Scott Hull production, Leeches sounds superb without being sterile. Hull allows the band to simply play, letting raw energy carry the commotion. When he does step in, like shoving the uvula-shattering screams of "Cult of War" into the limelight, it's a subtle but potent touch. Less obvious than the precision drumming, however, is just how mature Wake's songwriting has become. They showed off an impressive array of skills on Surrounded by Human Filth despite only having five tracks at their disposal, and with Leeches they demonstrate they know how to play with texture and tempo across a full length, whether it's the sneaky melodies that seep into "Aversion," obligatory slow song "Leeches" or the way "Dive's" corkscrew riff slithers between hammer of Thor cymbal crashes. At nearly three minutes and poised at about Leeches' midpoint, "Dive" is an expertly placed breather that sets off Wake's more aggressive fare. These grindcore puppies may be growing, but I hope nobody housebreaks them too soon. WALK THROUGH FIRE (Swe) – ‘Furthest From Heaven’ CD (€9) Take us to the place where the doom vibration reigns supreme. Take us to the place where all we hear is the heavy sonics of sludge. I know a band that can take us there – Sweden’s Walk Through Fire will be our guide & their new album, Furthest From Heaven, will be our soundtrack. This band has created an album that I’m very impressed with from start to finish. It’s not easy to make complex music sound simple, but this band achieves that with melodic clouds that float above the doom. The vocals in this band are awesome, but they are not the focus of the music, because the atmosphere that each note plays is the focus. Furthest From Heaven is heavy music that flies with the cosmic eagles off into space!
